The virtual challenge between various supermarket brands that have opened in the city in recent years seems to be working in Cremona. What has been talked about for a long time is the Eurospar soon to open in via Giordano, one of the few acronyms still missing in the city panorama. But, in fact, this competition seems to really benefit consumers. According to the latest survey by Altroconsumo, in fact, in the city of Torrazzo there is the possibility of saving up to 2000 euros a year by choosing the least expensive supermarket for the same basket of products: this is the best placement among the 67 Italian cities examined by the consumer association’s surveyors in the survey published in the September issue.
To be precise, the annual saving by choosing the cheapest point of sale instead of the most expensive is worth 1,931 euros in Cremona, compared, for example, to 1,269 in Ancona, 1,085 in Milan, 510 in Brescia, 134 in Messina. The panorama across the country is varied but in general it shows that competition between brands produces the best effects on consumers’ wallets in the cities of the North rather than the Central South.
The survey does not examine all the city’s supermarkets but only some. The one where you save the most is Rossetto in via Fiamme Gialle, followed by Esselunga in via Ghisleri, Famila Superstore, Iper Gadesco, Ipercoop Cremona, Conad viale Po, Coop via del Sale and Carrefour Market via San Tomaso.
“There is a fact – we read on Altroconsumo – that emerges very clearly from this year’s survey of supermarkets: all 35 chains whose prices we analyzed have increased significantly compared to last year, 12.6% on average (in March 2023 vs. March 2022). Much more than they had already done in 2022 compared to 2021, when growth was 2.6%. We saw this by precisely comparing the prices of the same products in the same shops visited in the two investigations.”
The price survey took place between 7 March and 1 April 2023 and involved 1,203 points of sale, considering the prices of all products in the 125 categories considered to be present on the shelves. “We worked out the prices and created an index that measures how competitive a chain is in the cities in which it is present and depending on the type of products you put in your cart.
The index 100 indicates the chain that had the lowest prices in the period of the surveys. If the index is 110 it means that the prices are 10% more expensive than the cheapest brand which has an index of 100.
Four rankings have been drawn up: one for shopping with the cheapest products on the shelf, one for shopping with branded products, one for commercial brand products (distributor or private label) and one for mixed spending, which includes all types of product.
