Instagram is currently testing a new feature that requires users to think about the right settings in advance. They can use it to share their locations on a map and show friends where they are.
The new feature is very reminiscent of Snapchat’s Snap Maps. However, unlike Snap Maps, where users can share their locations publicly, Instagram relies on a somewhat more limited solution.
Users must select a specific group of people with whom they want to share their location information, such as close friends or just followers they follow back, explains Christine Pai, spokeswoman for Meta, to The Verge.
Security aspects and test phase
According to Pai, the feature was “designed with safety in mind.” The new location map is currently only available in a small test phase in select markets. It is an opt-in feature designed to give users control over their location sharing.
Editor’s recommendations
This development is reminiscent of an earlier Instagram feature: back in 2012, users were able to see on a map where a photo of them had been taken. However, this option was only available for private use and was discontinued after four years due to low usage. Now Instagram seems to be going a step further with the new map feature.
Share your location carefully
The ability to share your location with friends can be convenient, but it also carries risks. How Snapchat recommends using their feature, you should think carefully about who you share this information with and make sure they are trustworthy people.
In addition, location sharing should only take place for the duration that is really necessary. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of each individual to maintain control over their personal data and not to disclose it carelessly.
Snapchat’s privacy tips will also apply to Instagram’s new maps feature when it is rolled out globally. However, it is currently unclear when this will be the case.
