“Credo” band founder Valdis Skujiņš: 50 years of music success and Golden Microphone Award

Musicologist and journalist Daiga Mazvērsīte states that the founder of the group “Credo” is bassist Valdis Skujiņš, who started rehearsing on October 4, 1974 with singer Ginta Burkevici and guitarist Aivars Liepiņas.

They were joined by Werners Bokums, Valērijs Kosminins, Irēna Burkēvice – in this composition, young people performed in restaurants in Liepāja.

In 1975, the first concert program was created, the next year, due to the lack of equipment, an acoustic program was prepared for the city show.

Of the 13 members at that time, several remained in the group – Viktors Dreimanis, Raivis Krūms, Aldis Langbaums.

In 1979, singer and guitarist Guntis Veits joined “Credo”, and the name “Credo” was finally officially approved. Its author is Ziedonis, the father of the group’s founder and leader, Valdas Skujiņas.

In 1980, “Credo” took part in the “Mikrofona” survey for the first time, three of their songs ranked in the top dozen at once, the 3rd place was reached by “Zinge par bailem”, followed by “Neko veman clark ženat”, which won the 7th place, and “When we let’s fall in love”, which came in at number 8.

Not only Veits composed successfully, but also guitarist Armands Alksnis, who joined the ensemble in 1981.

“Credo” records played on the radio, one small and two large records were released.

“Credo” demonstrated its dynamic performance at concerts in Latvia and beyond its borders: in Lithuania, Estonia, Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Germany, Sweden, Georgia, Congo and elsewhere.

They have a record – 33 concerts in Vietnam in 18 days, “Credo” are the pioneers of the tradition of charity events – in 1983 they gathered their listeners in front of Rundāle Palace.

In the mid-eighties, Guntars Brečs took the place of Bokums, while Skujiņš took full responsibility for the administration, Eduards Glotovs started playing the bass guitar, who was soon invited to Riga by “Remix”.

Norland Miller, Eddy Cionelis and Aivars Viksna became members of “Credo” at the end of the eighties of the last century.

On the other hand, in 1997, the renaissance of “Credo” began, when the group organized a concert tour in its classic composition in honor of the release of a selection of the best songs.

Veits has been working in Credo since 1999, together with Aivars Vīksna, Gundars Lintiņš, Guntars Endzelis, several albums have been released.

“Credo” celebrated its 40th anniversary with a concert in its native Liepāja, in which maestro Raimonds Pauls also participated.
