Creators of the Sovereigns present to Harvard University experts the development of Cuban vaccines against COVID-19 (+ Video)

Cuba today shared here the results of the advance of the anti-Covid-19 immunogens of the Sovereign line with experts from Harvard University, of the United States, and representatives of the international scientific community.

At the virtual meeting, the director of the Finlay Vaccine Institute (IFV), Vicente Vérez, referred to the clinical trials of the Soberana 02, Soberana Plus and Soberana 01 vaccines.

Vérez also highlighted the importance of joint work between that entity and others from the Caribbean nation such as the Center for Molecular Immunology (CIM), the Center for Biopreparations and the University of Havana, essential in the development of products.

He highlighted the results of phase III of the clinical trial with Soberana 02, in which the heterologous scheme of two doses of this vaccine plus one of Soberana Plus was applied, which showed 91.2 percent efficacy against symptomatic disease.

To this was added 75.7 percent against contagion and 100 against serious or severe cases, and equal value to prevent deaths; all this 14 days after the last of the three doses was administered.

On the other hand, he offered details about the Soberana Pediatría study, in which the same scheme was applied to about 350 children between the ages of three and 18, in Havana.

He pointed out that these vaccines showed high safety in the pediatric population and that is why Cuba authorized the first mass immunization campaign in age groups from two to 18 years old.

In turn, he stressed the importance of a product like Soberana Plus, the only one in the world designed for convalescents from Covid-19.

He said that the Cuban regulatory entity has already been asked to extend the authorization of emergency use of Soberana Plus for those who have already overcome the disease on the island.

In this regard, he stressed that during the phase II study it was shown that subjects with natural immunity against the SARS-CoV-2 virus and to whom the injection was applied increased antibody titers around 20 times.

Currently, the IFV is developing several studies with Soberana Plus, including internationally with countries such as Italy, to also use it as a reinforcement to existing vaccines and against the circulation of different variants of SARS-CoV-2, which causes Covid-19 .

In this way, they seek to see its ability to strengthen immunity, taking into account that it is very safe and more convenient in a third booster dose against RNA or adenovirus vaccines, said Vérez.

For her part, Dr. Belinda Sánchez, director of Immunobiology at the Center for Molecular Immunology, emphasized that these international events are relevant, since they allow Cuba to publicize the efforts and results of science in the face of a devastating pandemic like the current one.

Before concluding the appointment, Harvard doctor Marcia Castro congratulated the Cuban scientific community and sent her good wishes for the country to continue advancing with anti-Covid-19 vaccines.

He recognized that the Caribbean nation is the only one in Latin America to obtain its own immunogens and highlighted the island’s forecasts to vaccinate its entire population with them before the end of 2021.
