Creator of Yakuza: Switch is hardware for kids and teens

It is known that Nintendo home consoles are not a platform that welcomes games with controversial content or themes for adults, although there are exceptions such as Manhunt 2 on Wii and some others. Hence to think of a Grand Theft Auto or a Yakuza for a Nintendo system, especially if it is successful, it is more of a dream than a reality. Recently, the creator of the franchise inspired by the Japanese mafia spoke about it and hinted that this could stay as a wish.

During an interview to celebrate SEGA’s 60th anniversary, the SEGA of Europe division spoke with Toshihiro Nagoshi, creator of Yakuza, who had the opportunity to review some important moments in his career. In this sense, and within the framework of some questions related to Monkey Ball, whose delivery Super Monkey Ball was the first SEGA game for a Nintendo console, the GameCube, Nagohsi explained what the Japanese company’s systems represent for him: “I think that, even now, Nintendo platforms are still game consoles that are used by a wide range of age groups. But basically, I think it’s hardware for kids and teens. In the midst of all that, at that time, Nintendo was putting a lot of effort into the kids market as well, and I thought it would be appropriate {to launch Super Monkey Ball]”.

Although this does not mean a resounding “no” to the possibility of launching Yakuza en Switch, shows the creative and SEGA perspective of Nintendo, as a company whose products target a minor audience. Likewise, if we add to this that the only attempt to carry Yakuza a console of the Japanese company, with the first 2 deliveries for Wii U in Japan, failed, it seems very difficult that the story is going to change.
