In the United States, digital lending has grown in a relatively haphazard fashion, with a number of providers of digital books as well as digital audio books. Access to this content is sometimes complex for users, who must register and connect to several platforms, in addition to that of their library.
To streamline the lending process, the Digital Public Library of America, an institution that brings together the digital collections of libraries in the United States, will support the Palace project, which actually hides an iOS and Android application. The latter will bring together the digital catalog of libraries in one place, to facilitate consultation and, ultimately, borrowing.
In addition, each library will be able to customize this interface, in order to offer advice and recommendations to its users. The whole will be fully interoperable, to ensure that the technology does not limit equal access.
UNITED STATES: digital lending rights are gaining ground
The Digital Public Library of America will also act as chief negotiator for the acquisition of digital audio book and audiobook lending licenses, from publishers and other vendors, including Amazon Publishing.
See you in the fall of 2021, therefore, for the public launch of the Palace platform.
