As part of the offensive policy carried out in the fight against crime, Gérald Darmanin, Minister of the Interior and Overseas Territories, has decided to significantly strengthen the fight against insecurity in public transport.
For this reason, the Minister has decided to create 77 new units dedicated to securing transport, for a total of almost 2,000 more policemen and gendarmes, or a doubling of the personnel dedicated to this mission. This new staff will be made possible by the Orientation and Programming Law of the Ministry of the Interior (LOPMI), which establishes in particular the creation of 8,500 posts in the Ministry of the Interior and Overseas during the five-year period.
These reinforcements will be phased in until spring 2024 to be fully operational for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
A public transport security brigade (BSTC) will soon be created in the Hérault in Montpellier. This new unit, which will comprise between 10 and 20 police officers, will provide security missions for stations, public transport stations and the public transport network.
The patrols will take particular account of the moments in which delinquency is strongest for greater efficiency, but also of the peaks in attendance, to reassure and discourage. These missions can be combined with private security personnel from transport authorities.
In the area of the gendarmerie, 30 brigades dedicated to public transport (consisting of about 10 gendarmes each) will be created nationwide. The location will be decided following ongoing consultation with elected officials on the 200 new headquarters of the gendarmerie brigades.
