A vegetable garden does not have to have a distinct style, but harmony and order should reign in it. Practical division, decorative elements and beautifully shaped fruits supported by flowers of annuals and herbs conjure up a colorful mosaic of beauty and utility.
Sympathetic blending
We do not have to separate the self-supplying part from the ornamental part at all costs. On the contrary, we will hit the current trend when the boundaries between them disappear. Most vegetables are in no way behind decorative plants or inferior to them. How would Roman dialecta classy variety of lime-green cauliflower, a fire-flowering bean or perhaps a Lollo Rosso salad with purple curls could play second fiddle?
A greenhouse, a foil greenhouse, or is a steam room enough?
Tips and trends
A well-tuned orchestra
Dividing into smaller flower beds separated by paths is practical, they are easier to manage. At the same time, each species gets a proper say in them.
Vegetables are sown or planted clearly in groups or classically in rows. We can guide them in an arc, zigzag and diagonally. Just like the individual groups of instruments in an orchestra, the vegetables in the garden have their own hierarchy.
If we observe the correct spacing and the rule of the lowest in front, in the background, the enjoyment of different shapes and structures will be perfect. If we add to the traditional species special varieties or crops that have been almost forgotten, for example turnipan inimitable symphony of aromas and flavors will be created.
Up high!
Creeping field cucumbers and pumpkins hover in a lying position, while pole beans, which we sow outside from mid-May, actively climb the vertical support up to three meters high.
Not only beans, but also pumpkins and watercress (Tropaeolum majus) with edible flowers, leaves and fruits à la caper grow in the heat as if from water, so they are perfectly suited to greening the bowers above the footpath, which will bring a bit of romance and shade to the garden. This is especially suitable for salads and spinach, as they wither faster in the heat in direct sunlight and are forced to flower.
Raised flower beds made of wood, brick or fashionable corten will contribute to variety in height. Edges at a height of at least 75 cm above the ground protect the spine and deter most slugs from a free lunch. We rotate crops regularly, similar to traditional cultivation, otherwise there is a risk of one-sided depletion of the soil and the accumulation of harmful organisms.
Games (not only) with salads!
We will use the variety of colors and shapes of lettuce heads in the fight against boredom. The well-thought-out design of the flower beds will also turn it around. We can bend the edges of the beds into curves or bevel them into diamonds. A round island surrounded by a footpath and triangles gives the growing area a playful sun shape, which we especially enjoy when looking out the window. The perfection of the shapes accentuates the beautiful framing. The edges of the beds in the lawn need to be trimmed smoothly.
A solid border made of bricks, stone or planks is desirable where the beds are adjacent to paths paved with loose material. The sensory experience is conveyed by borders made of aromatic santum, sage, oregano. Cloves, velvets, lavender and sedums, in turn, attract pollinators, without which we would not be able to do in a productive garden.
