The importance of youth in building a sustainable future was underlined at the UN Economic and Social Council Youth Forum, which is being held at UN Headquarters in New York. Since the opening of the forum on the 25th, many Chinese youth representatives have participated in different activities and shared their innovative solutions, practical projects and achievements in promoting the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The forum lasted for three days and was conducted online and offline. Officials from international organizations, ministers of youth affairs, heads of youth organizations, and youth representatives from all walks of life conducted various discussions and exchanges under the theme of “Working with Youth to Accelerate Post-epidemic Recovery and Full Implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”.

UN Secretary-General Guterres pointed out in his video speech at the opening ceremony that in the face of climate change, conflict, poverty and other challenges, and the realization of the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals is at risk, the world today needs youth more than ever . The starting point of the forum is to “join hands with young people to find solutions to challenges”, and young people should play a leading role in creating a better future together.

Meet challenges with innovation and create the future with actions. Chinese youth are walking with the world.

Liu Jichen, the founder of the “CD punch” applet, participated in the dialogue at the opening ceremony as a youth representative from the Asia-Pacific region. When answering the host’s question about how young people can contribute to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, he said that he focuses on pursuing becoming a “change maker”, and that change is not far from daily life.

According to Yoo Ji-sun, the mini-program “Disc Check-in” was inspired by a restaurant offering rewards to encourage customers to reduce food waste. Users of “CD-ROM Check-in” have clocked in nearly 100 million times, and the action taken to reduce food waste is equivalent to reducing carbon emissions by 15,000 tons. “We are committed to motivating and empowering people to take action on everyday behaviors to avoid food waste and fight climate change.”

Lin Tengyu is the co-founder of Hongrun Qingyuan Technology Co., Ltd., leading a team with an average age of less than 30 years old to develop air water collection technology. When he participated in the discussion on the theme of “Clean Drinking Water and Sanitation Facilities”, he said that the technology development was inspired by the micro-nano structures on the surface of desert beetles and cacti. Lin Tengyu’s company and partners have implemented assistance projects in water-scarce areas of Ethiopia, helping more than 2,000 local primary school students to use clean and hygienic drinking water. In his speech, he called on young people from all over the world to work together and contribute to building a sustainable future.

Guo Xiaowen, a postgraduate student at the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering of Beijing Institute of Technology, shared the results at the Asia-Pacific Regional Group Meeting, providing a novel solution to water security issues from another perspective. She said that the water supply pipeline is a “bridge” connecting the water source and the user, but once there is a problem with the buried pipeline, it is very difficult to troubleshoot it. The leg-footed bionic dexterous robot mouse she participated in can work in pipes of any shape with a diameter of 10 centimeters, and preliminary tests have been completed so far.

“Youth play an important role in the realization of the sustainable development goals, and the potential of young people should be fully utilized.” Guo Xiaowen called on young people to solve the problems encountered in the implementation of the sustainable development goals through innovation and practice of entrepreneurship.

Youth innovation and entrepreneurship require government and social support. At the special event of the forum, Liu Kai, deputy secretary-general of the All-China Youth Federation, shared the practice and experience of the All-China Youth Federation in promoting youth employment and entrepreneurship, and expressed that the All-China Youth Federation hopes to work with young people from all over the world to advocate and support youth innovation actions to promote sustainable development .

UN officials including Guterres also called on governments to further expand youth participation in decision-making at the forum. At the Ministerial Roundtable of the Forum, representatives of participating countries introduced their youth work measures and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. Youth affairs officials from Brazil and other countries said that youth should also play an important role in building a new global governance system.

Fu Zhenbang, vice chairman of the All-China Youth Federation, said in a video speech at the ministerial roundtable of the forum that China is committed to implementing the concept of youth-first development and formulating and implementing medium- and long-term youth development plans. China is committed to giving full play to the role of young people as a new force, encouraging and supporting young people to innovate and create in fields such as the digital economy. China is committed to building a global partnership for youth development. The All-China Youth Federation actively participates in the youth affairs of the United Nations. This year, the second World Youth Development Forum will be held. Youth from all over the world are expected to actively participate and join hands to contribute to the implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda and the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.
