Created internet tool for insulation of historical buildings / Article / LSM.lv

Latvian scientists, together with partners from Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Italy and Switzerland, have succeeded in conducting an extensive study, as a result of which an Internet tool has been developed.ribuild.eu”. With its help, owners of historic buildings, architects and builders can learn how it would be best and safest to insulate an ancient stone building from the inside. –

About 30% of buildings in Europe were built before 1945. For the most part, these houses should either not or should not be insulated from the outside due to their architectural or cultural-historical value. Meanwhile, insulation from the inside poses various risks, such as the formation of high humidity and mold.

Insulating ancient masonry buildings from the inside has been a big challenge in many parts of the world so far, and it is considered a relatively risky measure.

“If I have a wonderful building with a wonderful facade, I just can’t put insulation on the outside, because then the house turns and I can’t tell from which era this building is,” explained a professor at the Institute of Environmental Protection and Heating Systems of Riga Technical University (RTU). Dagnija Blumberga.

Therefore, such buildings must be insulated from the inside. However, if errors are made in the insulation process, there is a risk of damaging the building and the formation of mold on the walls and structures.

“The more low-energy buildings are built, the greater the risk that people will migrate from non-insulated to modern buildings. It makes a difference whether I have to pay 1.50 euros per square meter per month for heating or I have to pay 20 cents. It is clear where the person will migrate, ”said Professor Blumberga.

To solve this problem, scientists from Riga Technical University, together with partners in Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Italy and Switzerland, have been studying insulated masonry buildings built before the Second World War, laboratory and millions of artificial intelligence simulations for more than five years. world war. Various thermal insulation materials and how they coexist, absorb moisture and dry have been tested.

“To increase people’s sense of security, we worked with foreign colleagues for five and a half years on a large project, which resulted in a tool that is available to anyone on the Internet. A person can enter data about their house and receive information on whether it is safe to insulate from the inside, how to insulate, how thick the material should be, so that there are no problems, ”said Professor Blumberga.

Internet tool ribuild.eu designed in simple language, so that building owners, designers and builders can easily navigate the recommendations.
