The COVID-19 pandemic has not reduced the wealth of the richest people in Africa, it has increased. Even so, their total wealth is not greater than that of the richest people in Asia, even when compared to just 1 person.
Launching Forbes, Sunday (31/1/2022), 18 billionaires on the African continent have a total wealth of US $ 84.9 billion or equivalent to Rp. 1,214 trillion. The total wealth of the 18 people increased 15% compared to the previous year, according to Forbes’ Africa’s Richest People 2022 data.
Even though the amount of wealth sounds huge, it still can’t surpass the wealth of the richest person in Asia. Even when compared to only 1 person, namely Mukesh Ambani.
According to data from Asia’s 20 Richest Families, Ambani was ranked first. He has a wealth of US $ 90.3 billion or equivalent to Rp. 1,291 trillion. The source of his wealth comes from the company his father Dhirubhai Ambani has founded since 1957, Reliance Industries.
Going back to the rich Africans, their average net worth is higher this year due to the currently smaller number of roster members.
Soaring stock prices from Nigeria to Zimbabwe also lifted the wealth of these tycoons. All of this is due to the increasing demand for products from cement to luxury goods there.
Forbes uses stock prices and currency exchange rates from January 19, 2022 to measure net worth. Billionaires from seven African countries made the list.
South Africa and Egypt have the most wealthiest people. There are 5 each, followed by Nigeria with three billionaires.
The richest person in Africa is currently occupied by Aliko Dangote with a total wealth of US $ 13.9 billion. Then followed by Johann Rupert & family at US $ 11 billion and Nicky Oppenheimet & family in third position with a wealth of US $ 8.7 billion.
