At the end of a meeting with a crazy scenario, the United States won the first Nations League in the Concacaf zone on Sunday evening. Opposed to Mexico, the United States team escaped after extra time (3-2), also saving a penalty at the very end of the match.
It took only 63 seconds for Mexico to take the lead thanks to a realization of Jesus Manuel Corona, the right winger of FC Porto. Giovanni Reyna tied the two teams (27th) after a recovery from a corner then, a few moments after a goal denied for Mexico.
Pulisic as savior
The game was again packed a few minutes from the end of regulation time with the advantage given by Diego Lainez (79th) then the equalizer in the wake signed Weston McKennie (82nd), on a corner also for the American midfielder of Juventus.
Recent winner of the Champions League with Chelsea, Christian Pulisic delivered his team from the penalty spot (114th) in overtime. An arbitration decision that infuriated the Mexican coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino, immediately excluded, and the many fans of the “Tri” who threw various objects on the field of Empower Field.
Some had distinguished themselves a few minutes earlier, punctuating with a homophobic insult the releases of the American goalkeeper, which caused the interruption of the meeting for two minutes during the stoppage of play in regulation time.
But everything could have changed in the additional time of this same extension (120th + 4 ‘), with a penlaty missed by Andrés Guardado, or rather saved by Ethan Horvath, who came into play. Despite the stifling last seconds, the United States have well managed to win the title, at home in Denver, for this first edition of this League of Nations of the Concacaf zone, initially scheduled for 2020 but postponed due to the health crisis.
