A crash between a tourist bus and a truck left at least 25 dead in Bahia, in northeastern Brazil, as confirmed by the state’s firefighters this Monday.
“Military firefighters responded to an incident that left 25 dead on BR 324 (highway), near the city of Gaviao,” reads the note about the accident, which occurred about 250 kilometers northwest of Bahia’s capital, Salvador.
There were also five injured in the accident that occurred on Sunday night, according to reports in the Brazilian press. After the rescue, the bodies of the fatal victims were handed over to the technical police for identification and legal procedures, the force expanded.
So far the causes of the accident are unknown. The white cabin of the truck involved, which was transporting mangoes, was completely twisted after the impact, according to images released by the local press.
The mayor’s office of Jacobina, a city close to the accident, declared three days of official mourning this Monday and is preparing a “collective wake” of the victims.
