Surprising turn of events in the Altes Land: The four remaining quay cranes on the site of the former Sietas shipyard are now being dismantled. As the cultural authority told NDR 90.3, the cranes’ monument protection status cannot be maintained.
The reason is that they have already been sold. Only the large Jucho gantry crane can stay. Politicians and members of the city council have been committed to preserving the crane ensemble. “The Liebherr gantry cranes were already sold before they were placed under protection by the monument protection office on September 18th and various contractual obligations were entered into in the process,” the cultural authority announced.
Public interest must be put aside
The public interest in preserving the four Liebherr gantry cranes must therefore be put on hold. “The balancing of the interests of monument protection with the public interests and the interests of the owner leads to the conclusion that the approval under monument protection law for the dismantling of the four Liebherr gantry cranes can be granted,” said a spokesman for the cultural authority.
Jucho crane can stay
The large Jucho crane is expressly not affected by the demolition project and can therefore “continue to document the development of heavy-duty crane construction as an individual monument as a relatively authentically preserved crane, as a special testimony to Neuenfelde’s industrial heritage,” it said. The crane makes an important contribution to the characteristic features of the townscape, which at this point in the Este estuary has long been characterized by shipbuilding and other port-related industries.
17-year-old SPD politician prevented dismantling
Without the efforts of 17-year-old student and SPD politician Ermya Ciger, the four quay cranes on the former shipyard site in Neuenfelde would have been dismantled on Saturday. Together with the city councillor Gudrun Schittek (Greens), he called the police twice. Only then was the dismantling work on the cranes stopped.
What happens to the property?
What remains unclear, however, is what will happen to the entire property of the former shipyard. There has been talk for some time that the city will take it over after a possible forced auction. “We hope that if the city really buys the property, it will also buy the Jucho gantry crane,” said SPD politician Ermya Ciger.
