“Crafting Pinocchio: MoMA’s Exhibition Tribute to Guillermo del Toro’s Acclaimed Film”

Recently, the multi-award-winning Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro said that “Animation has reached another level” and we have been able to verify this with his acclaimed film pinocchiowhich has made him win various awards around the world.

Because of this, it is not surprising that the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA) dedicated an exhibition-tribute to him for his film pinocchiothat after almost two months of being available, this April 15 will be his last day at the venue.

According to the media, said exhibition has been a success and has been packed with thousands of visitors to the venue, who generally seek to take a picture next to the Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh or other works by renowned painters such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí or René Magritte.

However, with the display Crafting Pinocchiothe assistants go in search of the giant puppet of Pinocchio that hangs from the ceiling with Jiminy Cricket on his chest.

It should be noted that said exhibition was orchestrated by Ron Magliozzi, a MoMA film curator and is displayed in three rooms, which make Guillermo del Toro the protagonist of the entire venue. These three areas show the artistic and craft process of the first film in stop-motion of the Mexican filmmaker.

In it we can see eight full-scale film sets, made in Portland by Mexican, English and American designers. Of course, there are the stellar puppets of the film, plans, scores, the puppet casts and the thousand faces of Pinocchio with their different expressions and moods.

In addition to these and other props that furnish the sets, the visitor can live the experience of not only being on the set, but also walking through Geppetto’s home-workshop, where he appears at the bottom of the stairs and the doll lies inert on the worktable by the window.

Finally, so that attendees can appreciate how the wooden doll is articulated, in the exhibition there is a dissection of Pinocchio’s body, as well as a reproduction of high-speed videos that document the complex process used in the stop-motion.
