Sport In the match of the 10th round of the PKO Ekstraklasa, Stal Mielec scored a valuable point, drawing with Cracovia 1:1. The match was full of emotions, and at the end there was a dramatic intervention by VAR, which equalized the score for the hosts. For Cracovia, this means the loss of second place in the table, and for Stal – the first point won away this season, although it was just short of taking the full prize.
Stal’s new coach, Janusz Niedźwiedź, gives reasons for optimism already in the first weeks of his work. After last week’s victory over Motor Lublin (1-0), the players from Mielec almost won another victory, this time away, which they had not managed to do since February. Ultimately, however, it was just enough to leave the relegation zone. At the end of the match, Stal withdrew to defense, which could have been a key decision that cost them the loss of two points.
Cracovia had the advantage for most of the first half, but Stal went into the locker room with the lead. In the 30th minute, after an unfortunate clearance by Kamil Glik, Matthew Guillaumier shot precisely at the left post, giving Stal the lead. The Malta representative scored a beautiful goal that left Cracovia’s goalkeeper, Henrich Ravas, without a chance to intervene.
In the second half, Cracovia tried to make up for the loss, but for a long time they could not find a way to defeat the well-organized defense of Stal. Everything changed in the 82nd minute when, after a long VAR analysis, referee Patryk Gryckiewicz decided that Marvin Senger had fouled Jakub Jugas in the penalty area. The referee’s decision aroused controversy, but ultimately Stal Mielec had to accept a penalty kick and a red card for Senger, which made the end of the match much more difficult.
Benjamin Källman, Cracovia’s best scorer (4 goals, 5 assists), barely converted the penalty kick, hitting the net through the hands of Jakub Mądrzyk. This equalization allowed Cracovia to gain a point, but it was not enough to return to second place in the table.
For Stal Mielec, the draw is a reason for moderate joy. The first point scored away this season shows that Janusz Niedźwiedź’s team is starting to gain form. However, Stal is still in the relegation zone and will have to fight for further points to leave the bottom of the table.
