Cracking Down on Illegal Tuk-tuks in Paris: Safety Concerns and Scam Alert

You have probably come across them everywhere in the streets of Paris. On board, tourists who discover the capital in a musical atmosphere. Tuk-tuks, these tricycles that flourish on Parisian roads and around tourist sites. The problem is that some are illegal.

Tuk-tuks were seized during police checks to check if they are allowed to travel on public roads. Since November, more than thirty vehicles have been impounded for destruction. Some have been transformed and therefore do not comply with safety rules.

“Is there a seat belt? Is the vehicle insured? Is it registered? arrive alongside and then after the most technical elements, in particular the engine power, will be checked by our teams” explains Jean-Sébastien Rosadoni, police commissioner and head of the regional road safety division.

Some tuk-tuks use cycle paths illegally. Beyond the inconvenience for traffic and the danger for passengers, drivers can also charge very high prices and thus take advantage of the credulity of tourists. This is why a call for vigilance is launched: “you have to ask in advance what the prices are to be sure not to be the subject of a scam. In any case, we take care of it, we carry out daily operations (…) operations which aim to ensure compliance with the rules of competition” confirms the commissioner.

These control operations take place regularly to ensure security in the capital. A prevention that should be reinforced with the approach of major events such as the Rugby World Cup and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
