The conclusions of the Central Planning Bureau The fact that the very rich pay relatively little tax and that the strongest shoulders do not carry the heaviest burdens probably put additional pressure on the discussion about taxing people with wealth.
Deputy Prime Minister Kaag said after the Council of Ministers that the study shows that income from property is taxed relatively low. She did not want to prejudge the discussions in the cabinet too much, but she called the report “an important mirror”.
Kaag added that “some steps still need to be taken” if the premise is that the strongest shoulders should bear the heaviest loads. According to her, there are “political dilemmas and it is also substantively complex”.
State Secretary Van Rij said this morning that he is mainly concerned about middle incomes. “That is really a group that does not benefit from allowances and tax credits, and that is simply having a hard time.”
‘Sensitive issue’
According to political reporter Ron Fresen, the government can no longer ignore the discussion about taxing people with wealth, also because the war in Ukraine is only increasing the financial problems. “Billions extra are being earmarked for defence, for the reception of refugees and for maintaining purchasing power a bit. If you don’t do anything about the assets now, the bill will mainly end up with middle incomes and the cabinet does not want that. “
Fresen continues: “When the cabinet was formed, it has not yet been possible to change the wealth tax. But due to a court decision, they had to stop the levy of wealth tax this year and they will mainly want to recover that missed income from people who earn a lot of money with their assets. In the coalition you hear that the discussion about assets is already being opened up this spring.”
The political reporter points out that it remains a sensitive discussion: “The differences between, for example, D66 and VVD about how you do this and at whose expense, are not just out of the world. You also soon talk about home ownership and taxing it more heavily. of people who earn money with it. But also within the VVD you see that this is different from, for example, ten years ago.”
