Cows Infected with Rabies in Jembrana: A Potential Threat to Humans

The Head of the Bali Province Agriculture and Food Security Service (Distan Pangan), I Wayan Sunada, explained that there are cows infected with rabies in Jembrana, and the virus can attack humans too.

In Denpasar, on Wednesday he said that rabies or also called Lyssavirus is a carrier of cold-blooded animals, such as dogs, cats and monkeys.

“If an animal infected with rabies bites humans, including animals that are bitten, it will also be infected, it’s called a zoonosis, it will definitely be infected,” he said.

The rabies virus, which infects both humans and animals, has an incubation period of two to eight weeks, and all of them will experience the same symptoms, such as fear of sunlight, fear of water, fear of crowds and frequent hiding.

“A cow infected with rabies in Jembrana goes berserk, meaning that it has been bitten by mad dog disease. Whether it’s cows, pigs, humans and other animals that are bitten will definitely be infected, “said Sunada.

As a result of the finding of a cow infected with rabies that died in Jembrana Regency, the Bali Food Agency appealed to breeders to be aware of rabies in domestic animals.

From his records alone, so far this year there have been 19 thousand bites by rabies-transmitting animals in Bali, in which as many as four people died as a result of positive rabies.

“We have worked hard, our target is 2024 humans or people who have died due to dogs are no longer available and we have enough vaccines because last night around 60 thousand doses arrived,” he said.

In addition, it is also scheduled to send 200 thousand doses of rabies vaccine assistance from Australia, so that up to now the percentage of rabies vaccine administration has been more than 59.24 percent of the total 600 thousand dogs.

Apart from dogs, rabies-transmitting animals such as monkeys must also be watched out for because monkeys were found positive for rabies in Tabanan.

“My hope is that if a family member is bitten by a dog, monkey or cat, they can be vaccinated. “If the monkeys that have been vaccinated are monkeys belonging to residents, if at tourist sites we limit dogs from interacting with monkeys, if there are dogs running around they will be immediately taken out or eliminated,” said Sunada.
