Cows are not climate killers – Agro Plovdiv – 2024-10-08 05:03:31

Wilhelm Windisch recommends that animals feed mainly on pastures to preserve biodiversity and improve flood protection

Emissions from livestock must decrease. Prof. Windisch suggests greater use of pastures and reducing the level of productivity of farm animals, writes the German publication Topagrar.

The former holder of the Department of Animal Nutrition at the Technical University of Munich, Prof. Wilhelm Windisch, says that the introduction of the cow as the killer of the climate is “distorting, misleading and leads to wrong policy decisions”. He presented a report on the topic on October 2 at the conference “Shaping the transformation – agriculture in the area of tension between sustainability and security planning”.

The scientist emphasized that it is clear that, for reasons of climate protection, emissions from animal husbandry will also have to be reduced in the future. But a completely vegetarian or vegan lifestyle and eliminating animal husbandry is the wrong approach. Instead, Windisch advocated a change in animal husbandry and prioritizing animal husbandry over energy production.

The scientist sees animal husbandry in the future mainly in pastures (where the Bulgarian herds were driven out, as they threatened biodiversity – b. r.). This means there is no competition with food production and at the same time the use of grassland ensures more biodiversity and improved flood protection.

Furthermore, biomass that cannot be used for food will increasingly be used for food in the future. Prof. Windisch gives as an example the use of bran from grain production or dried beet pulp from sugar production. Feeding farm animals with such residues is more efficient than using them in biogas plants. What is needed is a circular economy with a holistic view of biomass flows and limiting the productivity level of farm animals to feed productivity without the use of imported feed, the researcher suggests.
