DALLAS — The Dallas Cowboys have reached an agreement to renew the contract of Michael Gallup for five seasons and $62.5 million to prevent the receiver from becoming a free agent, according to multiple sources.
Gallup, 26, came to the Cowboys in the third round of the 2018 draft out of Colorado State University and immediately became an important part of the Cowboys’ receiving rotation.
In 2021, the final year of his rookie deal, Gallup played just eight games because of a calf injury sustained in Game 1 of the regular season. In all, he completed 35 passes for 445 yards.
At the end of the first half of the playoff game against the San Francisco 49ers, he suffered a knee problem that prevented him from continuing in the game and it is unlikely that he will be 100 percent recovered before the start of next season.
Gallup’s best season in the NFL was 2019, when he had 1,107 yards with 66 receptions and six touchdowns in 14 games.
Gallup’s new contract includes a guaranteed $27 million, the promise that he will be the team’s No. 2 receiver and more involved in the game plan, unlike what has happened since CeeDee Lamb He came to Dallas after being selected in the first round of the 2020 draft.
Lamb will be promoted to number one receiver for the Cowboys following the departure of Amari Cooperwho was traded to the Cleveland Browns in a deal pending medicals and would become official on Wednesday, with the start of the NFL calendar year.
Cooper’s departure to the Browns will free up $16 million in salary cap space for the Cowboys in 2022.
The Cowboys still have another one of their receivers lined up for free agency, Cedrick Wilsonwhose contract is unlikely to be renewed due to salary-cap restrictions.
Last week, the team renewed the contract of backup catcher Noah Brownwho will return for his fifth season with the Cowboys.
