The Dallas Cowboys have continued to have offensive problems for many reasons. Among them are the problems on the offensive line. Which frequently star Connor McGovern, who took over a week ago when the Cowboys board decided to make a bet.
Now, judging by comments from Jerry Jones and Mike McCarthy, it appears the Cowboys are willing to call off the McGovern experiment. Multiple reporters have indicated that Williams is getting plays with the first team in practice.
Which, despite the penalties, is definitely the best option for the Dallas Cowboys.
This I wrote on November 19 in this very section about the decision to seat him in favor of McGovern:
“Although the change is exciting for the Dallas Cowboys, it must be admitted that it is a risky change for the team. Williams has been punished frequently, but he is still a good player on the offensive line. In fact, in percentage terms of allowed pressures, he is the fourth best guard in the NFL.
This has been the story of Connor Williams for most of his career. He is a good offensive guard surrounded by elite players like Tyron Smith, Zack Martin, and La’el Collins. He is very punished because part of his strategy is to hold the opponent. Which may not be ideal, but it’s also not new to the NFL. There are players who reached the Hall of Fame with this strategy. “
The Cowboys decided to bet that a trade would benefit the team. And maybe they thought that with a little luck, McGovern would show that he can start and that they would no longer have to pay Williams in free agency or worry about filling his gap in 2022.
Although I was never a fan of the movement, I respect that they decided to make such a bet. But it’s time to cancel it because clearly, McGovern hasn’t done things right for the Dallas Cowboys. They constantly beat him on his blocks and especially he has looked bad in movement in plays where they ask him to “pull” and slide.
While it’s not the only problem with Kellen Moore’s offense, the Cowboys will be making the right decision by returning Williams to his starting job. Everything indicates that this will be the case on Sunday.
