Cow that was carried 100 kilometers through the Meuse is doing well ‘and will never be slaughtered’ | flood

Unbelievable actually, says owner Har Smeets from Echt in Limburg. It was his cow that was fished out of the Maas near Escharen on Saturday, after a swim of no less than 100 kilometers. To everyone’s surprise, there is nothing wrong with the animal. The cow is back home again.

The fire brigade said on Saturday it was ‘very surprising’ that the cow had reached such a distance. “We do not know whether the animal was completely fed through the water, or whether there were also pieces on which the cow hit the ground with its legs,” a spokesperson said.

Nice to rest on the straw

The owner, Har Smeets from Echt in Limburg, also sticks his surprise at 1 Limburg not under chairs or benches: ,,It is unbelievable that such an animal can swim so far. The cow is doing very well. She is resting comfortably on the straw. And she’s eaten something again, so there’s nothing wrong with it. She was still examined by a vet in Brabant, and that was all good too.”

According to Smeets, nobody has to worry that the cow will end up in a slaughterhouse in the future. “She goes back to the meadow and she can roam there for the rest of her life.”

A cyclist saw the animal almost submerge in the rising water on Saturday morning and raised the alarm, prompting the emergency services. The cow was then rescued by the Grave fire brigade with a special team from Boekel. Fate was not equally favorable to all of Smeets’ animals. The farmer has lost at least ten cows that ended up in the Meuse. At least one, who was driven to Grubbenvorst in Limburg, has died.
