A new round of vaccinations against the coronavirus started this week. People in risk groups are allowed to go to a vaccination location. A quarter of the people who do not belong to this group would also like a shot.
This is evident from research by EenVandaag among the members of the Opinion Panel.
Enthusiasm among risk groups
People over 60, people who are invited every year for the flu shot, healthcare workers who work with patients, pregnant women and people with a medical risk can receive a shot against the coronavirus again since this week.
About half are interested in this. 43 percent of people in these risk groups definitely want to be vaccinated this round or have already had the shot. Another 14 percent are not yet sure, but think they will ‘probably’ go to an injection location.

‘Protecting myself and loved ones’
The enthusiasm for a new shot is highest among the elderly. People who want to be vaccinated do so to protect themselves and their loved ones.
There are also people who still have doubts. They have not yet received an invitation or want more information from, for example, their GP before they make a decision.
‘Sufficiently protected’
Others do not see the added value. Many have had corona and have been vaccinated previously, and therefore now feel sufficiently protected. There are also people who do not think corona is dangerous at all.
Many people who do not want the injection indicate that they have become ill from it in the past. “I’m sure I’m sufficiently protected now, it’s not worth it for days of misery at this stage.” Others do not believe in how it works.

Some people who are not at risk also want an injection
In principle, people who fall outside these risk categories cannot now receive a vaccination. Yet some of them would also like that. A quarter (26 percent) of people who do not belong to one of the risk groups would definitely or probably get a shot if they could.
They mainly say that they want to do that ‘just to be sure’. Especially if they have a vulnerable person in their environment. “Extra protection for me and my loved ones wouldn’t hurt,” someone wrote.
Few concerns about coronavirus
Despite the interest in the shot, relatively few people are concerned about corona. The numbers have been low for two years and the start of autumn and the new round of injections will not change this. 11 percent are now concerned about the virus. That is the same amount as earlier this year, when the cabinet decided to abolish the basic advice.

Concerns about the coronavirus over time
The figure is higher among people with vulnerable health. More than a quarter (27 percent) of people in a so-called ‘medical high-risk group’ are now concerned. The same applies to almost one in five (18 percent) people over 60.

About the research
The survey was conducted from October 3 to 6, 2023. 30,158 members of the EenVandaag Opinion Panel participated in the survey. The results are weighted and representative of six variables, namely: age, gender, education, marital status, distribution across the country and political preference, measured towards the 2021 House of Representatives elections. The Opinion Panel consists of more than 80,000 members.
