Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The UK has officially announced the removal of all legal restrictions on the corona virus (Covid-19). After removing masks, now the kingdom no longer requires someone infected with corona to self-isolate (isoman) and even removes free corona testing.
This was said directly by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Monday (21/2/2022) local time. This is a new step in Britain’s “living with Covid-19” strategy, shifting government intervention in dealing with the pandemic to each individual’s personal responsibility.
The obligation to self-isolate will be lifted from Thursday. Meanwhile, free Covid-19 testing will no longer be provided by the government starting April 1.
“Restrictions are taking a heavy toll on our economy, our society, our mental well-being and on our children’s chances of survival. We don’t have to ‘pay’ those costs anymore,” Johnson told parliament, quoted by Reuters. Reuters.
“So let’s learn to live with this virus and continue to protect ourselves and others without limiting our freedom.”
He said monitoring would continue. Such as the quick response if there is a new variant by the Office of National Statistics (ONS).
However, he admits that Covid-19 has caused huge costs for the government. Therefore, he said, the government should reduce it.
“Just because we know Omicron isn’t that severe, testing for Omicron at the scale we’ve been doing becomes less important,” Johnson said.
“This comes at a huge cost… We must now reduce this.”
The UK is the country with the second most Covid-19 deaths in Europe, in the last 28 days, after Russia. Where the case died reached 160,000 deaths.
