Covid: the Delta variant represents “around 20%” of new cases in France

“We must remain very vigilant,” warns the Minister of Health. The Delta variant of the Covid, more contagious, which had appeared in India and whose meteoric progression is causing re-containments in several countries around the world, is also progressing strongly in France. It now represents, according to Olivier Véran, nearly one in five new infections in France.

“The Delta variant represents about 20% of the new diagnoses that we carry out”, declared the Minister of Solidarity and Health on Franceinfo on Tuesday. “It continues to rise in percentage, not in absolute value, given that there is a decrease in the number of cases,” he said. Some 509 new cases of coronavirus have been identified in the past twenty-four hours by Public Health France.

“It is gradually becoming dominant”

Less than a week ago, this variant of the virus represented “between 9 and 10% of new positive cases in France,” government spokesman Gabriel Attal reported on leaving the Council of Ministers last Wednesday. The week before, its share was limited to 2 to 4% of contaminations.

The Delta variant “is gradually becoming dominant”, recognized Olivier Véran. A behavior which is verified “in all the countries of the world, since it is more contagious”, unrolled the minister.
