A few days after the use of the mask is no longer mandatory in Spain, science continues to investigate the appearance of new variants of covid and the symptoms associated with them.
Recently, the WHO has detected two new mutations of Omicron, called BA.4 and BA.5. Both spread throughout South Africa with “additional” mutations already studied by the organism. Until now, variant BA.2 had displaced BA.1 and it is already the one with the largest presence in the world, although South Africa has detected a significant number of cases with BA.4 and BA.5.
On the other hand, a study published in the scientific journal ‘The Lancet’ and carried out by scientists at King’s College London has shown that the duration of symptoms in patients infected with Covid-19 varies according to the variant with which they have been infected.
Thus, the research reveals that the duration of symptoms in people who have received three doses of the vaccine and have been infected with the Omicron variant is shorter than in those with a booster dose but who have been infected with the Delta variant.
Duration of symptoms with Omicron and Delta
The King’s College London study shows that symptoms in those infected with the Omicron variant last an average of 4.4 days. A shorter period than in patients infected with Delta, in which the duration of symptoms lasts up to seven days on average.
What is the reason?
The reason why the symptoms in patients infected with Omicron are less than in those infected with Delta may be due to to a shorter period of infection.
The study collected data from more than 63,000 citizens who reported symptoms related to SARS-CoV-2.
Most frequent symptoms of the Omicron variant
The Omicron variant of the coronavirus is a less lethal strain but much more contagious than Delta. In addition, different studies have revealed that Ómicron affects the lungs less but the throat much more. These are the most common symptoms:
- Fatigue
- Muscle pain
- nasal fluid
- sneezing
- Headache
- Throat pain.
