The emergency coronavirus it is creating many problems for health workers. Doctors and nurses infected with the virus are growing in number and the remaining staff are subjected to high pressure. To draw a precise picture of the situation is Walter Ricciardi, professor of Hygiene and Public Health at the Catholic University and consultant of the Ministry of Health. “At this moment, in Italy, we are unable to treat Covid patients and not even those suffering from other diseases because we are waging a war in which our army of health workers is gradually decimating”, explained the expert during a speech at the online event “Next generation health: the priorities of Italians for the health of the future”, organized by the pharmaceutical company Janssen Italia.

Ricciardi stressed that in the last month 27 thousand doctors and operators were infected and “there were already 53 thousand nurses“. “The news came yesterday that an important Italian cancer facility had to suspend chemotherapy because the only nurse who was on duty became infected. Right now we have patients who have oncological pathologies and cannot access chemotherapy, just as other patients cannot undergo necessary surgery and still others cannot access cardiovascular therapies, ”he added. “In short, it is a situation that predetermines that perfect storm we have been talking about for some time. There is a huge access problem and we need to get a move on ”.
“We need an extraordinary hiring program”
Also during his speech, Ricciardi said that the Italian health system needs an extraordinary recruitment program that also includes an increase in salaries. For the expert this is a necessary condition to entice recent graduates to stay in Italy and not to move to another EU country where “they can earn between 3 thousand and 4 thousand euros per month”. Ricciardi then added that it is necessary to implement a “rapid digital transformation and an active involvement of patients”.
