However, the total number of deaths decreased in the second year of the pandemic, from 76,195 in 2020 to 71,166 in 2021, the Federal Statistical Office (OFE) reported on Tuesday.
The death rate thus returned to the usual level of about 70,000 deaths per year.
Nearly half of the deaths are due to cardiovascular disease (27%) or malignancies (22%), the OFE said. COVID-19 was the leading cause of death for 8% of the total, up from 12% in 2020. Most COVID-19 deaths occurred among men.
Other leading causes of death included dementia, circulatory disease, diabetes, and violent accidents and deaths, including suicide. The flu, on the other hand, has caused almost no deaths. Two fatal cases of flu were recorded in February and one in December.
