Covid Positive Boy Desperately Goes to School, 80 US Students Isolate

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

More than 80 students of Marc Herz Middle School in Nevada, United States of America, forced to be isolated after a student continued to go to school despite knowing he was infected Covid-19.

Washoe County District Health Officials said the student was still being driven to school on Monday this week even though he and his parents had tested positive for Covid-19 two days earlier.

The incident occurred on the first day of teaching and learning activities at the Marce Herz Middle School after it was closed during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Washoe County Education Office also asked students who had close contact with the Covid-19 positive student to quarantine at home and study online for at least the next two weeks.

In a statement sent to all parents, the Principal of Marce Herz Middle School, Brandon Bringhurst, said students who were declared to be in close contact with the Covid-19 positive student could take the corona virus test again after August 14.

If students test negative for Covid-19 and have no symptoms, they can return to school on 17 August.

He stated that parents can bring a Covid-19 vaccination card so that students can carry out teaching and learning activities directly at school again.

Meanwhile, reported CNNThe school did not provide information about the Covid-19 positive student. The student’s parents also refused to communicate with the Washoe Health Department or school officials.

“We are not seeking to invest our limited resources in filing lawsuits against parents at this time,” the Washoe Department of Health said in a statement.

This incident occurred when schools in the US started a new school year with a direct teaching and learning system. At the same time, the US is facing a surge in new Covid-19 infections.

In some states, such as Texas and Florida, local officials are at odds with governors over mandatory masks in schools.

Kindergarten to grade 12 students, school staff, parents, and school visitors are required to wear masks in the school complex regardless of whether they have been vaccinated against Covid-19 or not. The rules are in line with Nevada state directives.

Currently, the rate of positive cases of corona in Washoe is around 17 percent with the number of Covid-19 cases in children up to 17 years soaring between June-July. Meanwhile, more than 58 percent of residents aged 12 years and over in the region have completed the Covid-19 vaccination.
