Covid, other 1,585 cases: the sick are 41,000. “More hospitalizations, but the system holds up”

More swabs, more positive: the coronavirus rule is confirmed once again. According to data from the bulletin of the Ministry of Health, 1,585 new cases of contagion were recorded yesterday against 1,452 the previous day. The epidemic curve therefore continues to rise, but at the same time the number of swabs also grows which yesterday were 101,773 (about a thousand more than Wednesday). The regions that have the most infections are Lombardy (281), Campania (195) and Lazio (181), and unfortunately no territory can be called Covid free. Thirteen people who lost their lives (one more than the previous 24 hours), with the total number of victims in Italy rising to 35,658 since the beginning of the epidemic.

Terapie intensive

But what emerges against the light from the data that are updated daily is the sneaky trend of the epidemic that is bringing the most fragile and the elderly back to hospital. Yesterday, in fact, there was a growth in the number of coronavirus patients: 881 more in 24 hours, with a total of 41,413 currently positive in the country (never so many since June). There was also an increase in patients admitted to ordinary wards (2,348, 63 more than Wednesday), in intensive care (+5, for a total of 212) and in home isolation (38,853, 813 more). However, the total number of discharged and healed people also grew to 215,954, with an increase of 689 people out of danger. And it is precisely on Italian hospitals that – from now and for the next few months – the attention of experts is shifting. But for now, it must be stressed, the numbers are largely manageable and the health system is functioning smoothly thanks to increasingly effective therapies. The president of the Gimbe Foundation, Nino Cartabellotta, explains it well: “There are no signs of overload, but the trend requires us to keep our guard up also due to the unpredictable impact of returning to school on the contagion curve”.

Average age of the infected

In its independent weekly monitoring, in fact, the Foundation found that from 21 July to 15 September hospitalized patients with symptoms increased from 732 to 2,222 and patients in intensive care from 49 to 201. “The median age of the infected – explains Cartabellotta again. – has been reduced for over 60 years in the first two months of the epidemic to below 30 in the central weeks of August. In the last 15 days, however, the age of the positives has risen to about 40 years, showing that asymptomatic young people, when they come into contact with adults and elderly people in the family, infect the most fragile who develop symptoms and may need a hospitalization, even in intensive care ». And it is precisely for this reason that “the Regions must enhance testing and tracking”. And a new weapon may be coming soon: rapid tests. “I think it is just a matter of a week or two to have them on the market,” announces Undersecretary of Health, Sandra Zampa.
