The main symptoms those with Covid are likely to experience are a sore throat or cough and runny nose, according to data from 17,500 people who said they tested positive in mid-July 2022.

Other symptoms reported were headache and stuffy nose.

The 20 Covid symptoms, in order, according to data from the Zoe App study are as follows:

- Sore throat – reported 58%
- Headache – 49%
- Nasal congestion – 40%
- Cough without sputum – 40%
- Colds – 40%
- Cough with phlegm – 37%
- Hoarseness – 35%
- Bersin- 32%
- Fatigue – 27%
- Sore muscles – 25%
- Dizziness – 18%
- Swollen cervical glands – 15%
- Eye pain – 14%
- Changed odor- 13%
- Chest pain, shortness of breath – 13%
- Fever – 13%
- Shivering – 12%
- Shortness of breath – 11%
- Earache – 11%
- Loss of smell – 10%

The above symptoms were also reported by other researchers.

A number of variants of Covid have emerged since the corona virus was first discovered in Wuhan, China. The newest one is Omicron.

React-1 researchers from Imperial College London say loss of smell and taste is now less common with the new variant. More and more people are reporting symptoms such as cough and cold.

Scientists studied the Omicrons that first spread in March 2022, known as BA.1 and BA.2.

Since then, two new Omicron subvariants called BA.4 and BA.5 have predominated and caused more infections.

Around 2.7 million people in the UK or one in 25 people are estimated to have Covid.

Professor Tim Spector, who ran the Zoe Health Study, said: “Covid is still rampant among the population.

“Even if people have had it before and they are fully vaccinated, people can still get it.”

“While we all want to enjoy the nice air (it’s summer in the UK), people need to consider whether to go to big events, work in the office or use public transport,” Spector said of the Zoe and React 1 study.
