Another 37 cases of coronavirus infection occurred among participants in the Beijing Olympics.
Sunday’s tests revealed covid-19 in 28 people who arrived at the Olympics, including nine athletes and their entourage. Another nine people tested positive in the closed Olympic bubble.
Among the positively tested members of the Russian team were the defenders of the silver medal from Pyongyang, skeletonist Nikita Tregubov, his national team colleague Vladislav Semyonov and biathlete Valerie Vasnetsova.
All three will lose the start of the games because of that. “It was clear yesterday that I would not make it to the Olympics,” wrote 26-year-old Tregubov on Instagram, who also has a silver and bronze medals from the World Cup.
“Unfortunately, my Olympic dream will remain just a dream. One day I will find the strength to rise again, but it will be about something completely different,” a 24-year-old member of the Russian relays wrote on Instagram.
This season in the World Cup, she fought her way to the podium three times and also considered a medal in Beijing.
In the Russian team, she should be replaced by Yevgeny Burtasova, who won the endurance race and the mixed doubles relay at the European Championships in Arber, Germany last week.
On Saturday, 34 positive coronavirus tests appeared in connection with the games in Beijing, a total of 176 since January 23.
