The circular signed by the director general of the Ministry’s Prevention Department, Giovanni Rezza, in launching the alert, looks with concern at August, when the Delta variant will cover from 70 (at the beginning of the month) to 90 percent of cases. During the summer months, any relaxation of measures without a simultaneous increase in the levels of complete vaccinations in the population, could lead to a sudden and significant increase in cases in all age groups, especially under 50 years, with an associated increase of hospitalizations and deaths.

In Spain, the greatest danger comes from the nightlife. If the incidence jumped to 252 cases per hundred thousand inhabitants (in Italy this value is currently 11) it reaches 800 out of one hundred thousand in the age group between 12 and 29 years. Also due to the increase in infections in the Netherlands, tourism in the Iberian Peninsula is the main suspect: 81 positives were identified on 16 return flights from Palma de Mallorca, another 60 on 14 air connections from the Algarve, a Portuguese region with a high rate of nightlife. And 205 new positives, all between 15 and 29, had been in Spain or Portugal. A different alarm comes from the Finnish health officials: 481 Covid positive had returned by plane from Russia after attending the matches of the European football championship in St. Petersburg. All sequenced samples belong to the Delta variant. In the circular, the director of the Ministry of Health indicates the three tools that the local health system must use to try to contain the infection.
