COVID incidence in the world reaches a plateau – WHO

Over 5.4 million people were infected in the world over the past week

The head of the WHO said that the plateau for the incidence of coronavirus and mortality is at an unacceptably high level.

Morbidity and mortality from coronavirus in the world hit a plateau at “unacceptably high levels.” This was announced at a briefing on Monday, May 10, by the Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adanom Ghebreyesus.

According to him, over 5.4 million people were infected over the past week and almost 90 thousand died.

“Globally, we are now seeing a plateau in the number of COVID-19 cases and the number of deaths,” he said. “However, this is an unacceptably high plateau, with over 5.4 million cases and nearly 90,000 reported last week. dead “.

Gebreyesus noted that the decline in morbidity and mortality is now being observed in Europe and the region of the Americas, which were previously particularly affected by the coronavirus pandemic. At the same time, a rapid increase in the number of infected and deaths was recorded in Southeast Asia, to which the WHO also includes India. In addition, “in every region there are countries with an upward trend” in morbidity and mortality.

The head of WHO also stressed that the weakening of sanitary measures and “unequal vaccination” contribute to the spread of infection in the world. He called the lack of equal access to vaccines “one of the biggest risks.”

“Countries with high and middle incomes account for 53% of the world’s population, but they received 83% of the vaccine,” the director general recalled.

Ghebreyesus called on the leaders of the countries “to use all the tools at their disposal to reduce the transmission of COVID-19.” This also applies to countries where morbidity and mortality are currently decreasing.

Ghebreyesus said it is now necessary to strengthen the capacity to prevent the spread of infection in order to prepare for the spread of new strains against which vaccines are powerless.

It was previously reported that Ukraine is the second in Europe in mortality from COVID… Also, Ukraine ranks 11th among the countries of the world in terms of the number of new infections, among European countries – the fourth.
