Over the past two weeks, Nevada has seen a rapid increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations from the virus; a situation that Governor Steve Sisolak referred to as “alarming” in a recent press release.

Sisolak’s message urging people to get vaccinated, wear face masks, and stay alert came two days before Nevada hit a record high on Wednesday: More than 500,000 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began.

The increase in cases is due in part to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant and the holidays throughout the state and country.

The governor’s office also indicated that it has no plans to change a policy that allows fully vaccinated people to stop wearing face masks in large enclosed spaces with proof of COVID-19 vaccine.

As of last Thursday, more than 70 percent of Nevadans had been partially or fully vaccinated against COVID-19, with 39.4 percent fully vaccinated but without a booster and 17.4 percent fully vaccinated with a booster.

The epidemiologist and public health researcher of the American University Melissa Hawkins said in PBS than vaccines Pfizer and Moderna demonstrated more than 90 percent efficacy (how well a vaccine works) in preventing symptomatic infections.

Hawkins added that initial study data suggests that vaccines are 30 to 40 percent effective in preventing Omicron variant infections, and 70 percent effective in preventing serious disease.

As the number of cases increases, hospitals in southern Nevada and rural parts of the state are seeing an increase in hospitalizations amid what the Nevada Hospital Association described as a “staffing crisis.”

Washoe County Health District Officer Kevin Dick told reporters last week that the Omicron variant is nearly six times more transmissible than the spread of the virus in 2020 and that the effective reproduction rate of the virus in Washoe is the highest. high that he has seen since the pandemic began.

Looking for COVID-19 testing sites?

In addition to Sam Boyd, this Sunday the Southern Nevada Health District announced the opening of two more COVID-19 testing sites through the car window in the parking lots of Texas Station and Fiesta Henderson. Both will be available for 21 days.

The Texas Station town will be open to the public starting this Wednesday, January 12 at 3 pm at 2101 Texas Star Lane and will be in operation from 12 pm to 8 pm Wednesday through Sunday. Fiesta Henderson will open on Saturday, January 15 at 3 pm at 777 W. Lake Mead Parkway. This location will operate from Saturday to Wednesday from 12 pm to 8 pm

Those interested can schedule their appointment at: www.INeedaCOVID19Test.com. Additional sites for COVID-19 testing are available at www.snhd.info/covid-testing.

Washoe County added four test sites that are open from 8 am to 4:30 pm each weekday. No appointments required (no evidence through the car window, but officials say plenty of parking is available).

Additional sites offer rapid antigen tests with results in one hour, and can accommodate up to 1,600 people per day. Click here for more information.
