China’s Zhejiang province is battling around one million cases COVID-19 new every day. The Zhejiang provincial government said the number was expected to double in the coming days.
Reported by Reuters on Sunday (25/12/2022) Zhejiang is a large industrial province near Shanghai. Despite a record spike in cases nationwide, China has reported no COVID-19 deaths for 5 days through Saturday, the China Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said.
Zhejiang is one of the few regions expecting a spike in new cases, including asymptomatic cases.
“The peak of infections is expected to come earlier in Zhejiang and enter a period of rising around the New Year, during which the number of daily new infections will reach 2 million,” the Zhejiang government said in a statement.
Zhejiang Province with a population of 65.4 million, that among 13,583 infected cases treated in provincial hospitals, one patient had severe symptoms due to COVID-19, while 242 severe and critical condition infected cases were caused by diseases in comorbidity.
Citizens and experts have called for more accurate data after Beijing made sweeping changes to its zero-COVID policy.
Meanwhile, national data from China has become incomplete as the National Health Commission stopped reporting asymptomatic infections, making it difficult to track cases. However, related information about COVID will be released by the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
