Covid hospitalizations soar again in New York

People wait in line for a COVID-19 test at a medical clinic near the Staten Island neighborhood of Tottenville on November 20, 2020 in New York City.

(Bloomberg) – Coronavirus hospitalizations are increasing rapidly in New York, already depleting capacity on Staten Island, Governor Andrew Cuomo said Monday.

Of the more than 191,000 tests reported Sunday, 5,906, or 3.08%, were positive, according to state data. There were 2,724 new hospitalizations and 33 deaths related to the virus.

“It is a dangerous situation,” Cuomo told reporters.

Daily covid hospitalizations rose to 2,700, a 122% increase from 1,200 three weeks ago, he said. At that rate, the state will have 6,000 daily hospitalizations in the next three weeks, he said.

The state will reopen an emergency center for covid-19 patients in South Beach on Staten Island, he said.

“Hospitalization is a good way of saying that more people are dying,” he said.

Coronavirus cases statewide have exceeded 600,000 since the start of the pandemic, having totaled 100,000 since the end of October. New York has had more than 5,000 new cases daily for the past seven days.

“This is a toxic cocktail of dynamics and facts,” Cuomo said.
