Greece is preparing for the return of tourism for the summer of 2021 with a singular measure against Covid. The Greek government promises 150 euros to all young people between 18 and 25 who will be vaccinated against the Coronavirus. It was the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who announced the measure that affects almost one million Greeks, exactly 940,000 people who fall into this age group.
The government, explained the premier, thus intends to allocate 141 million euros for this initiative aimed at reaching 60% of the vaccinated population by the end of July. In reality, contacts will not be given to young people but a voucher, called the freedom card, which can be used for tourist expenses – hotels, ferries, airplanes – and for museums and concerts.
It will be a way to thank them for having faced the long and difficult lockdowns while reminding them that now that they can regain their freedom, young people still need to be aware of the risk of the virus. “Perhaps the young people think that they cannot catch Covid or, if they catch it, they do not get seriously ill – he concludes – but they are the ones who allow it to be transmitted”.
