“Heroes in white shirts.” So the doctors in the trenches have been renamed in recent months in the battle against Covid. And if even before this tsunami the medical career was very sought after, it is likely to imagine that at the next test to enter Medicine on the calendar on September 3 there will be a new race for enrollments that will be possible until July 23. On average, over the years, 60-70 thousand showed up, this year could be many more. The good news is that there are 1,500 more places to enter the courses: 13,072 in all.
The extra places in Medicine
Last year the available places had already grown from 9,779 to 11,568, this year for those who pass the quiz tests of the next 3 September they exceed 13 thousand, (13,072 to be exact). “We have increased the number of places available, 1,500 more than last year, making the most of the training capacity – warns the minister of the University Gaetano Manfredi – considering both Medicine and the health professions: it is the maximum we can do with the number of teachers and facilities available “. The decree just signed by the university minister indicates the places available for each course and location, with 9 new entries between debuts and detachments: 2 for Dentistry (Rome UniCamillus and Cagliari); 7 for Medicine and Surgery (in Enna and Trento five new branch offices are added such as Treviso for Padua, Taranto for Bari, Forlì and Ravenna for Bologna, Cotignola for Ferrara).
Healthcare will need doctors
If there is a lesson to be drawn from Covid’s tragic experience, it is that our country can no longer afford a shortage of specialist doctors. Shortage that forced the government during the emergency to take on extraordinary hires even among doctors already retired. Now also in view of the extraordinary funds that could come from the EU to secure the National Health Service, a season never seen before of hiring doctors and nurses could open. Hence the increase in the places available in Medicina, which has always been a limited number of courses, but also in the equally precious specialization scholarships, those which are essential after graduation to become a medical specialist with courses that last on average 4-5 years.
The training funnel risk
Medical scholarships in the past have always been too few (6-7 thousand) compared to medical graduates and so a training funnel has been created that has kept 10-15 thousand young doctors out of the specialization course. But even here the numbers are finally growing: last year the scholarships for specialization courses became 8,900 in all, but in 2020 it could rise to 13 thousand thanks to the extra funds allocated in the relaunch decree now under consideration by Parliament will translate into 4,200 more bags. Numbers that, however, may not be sufficient as pointed out also by the president of the Order of doctors Filippo Anelli who says “no to the increase in places to enter the Faculty of Medicine without having first cleared the training funnel in which thousands of graduates are located who still have not been able to access the specialization. Reform is needed immediately: each degree must be paid a training grant ». Anelli underlines that scholarships are not enough with eleven thousand doctors, already graduated and qualified, who risk remaining “prisoners of the training funnel indefinitely, the bottleneck between graduation and specialization”.
The entrance tests on September 3rd
The quiz tests for the 2020/2021 academic year will be held on 3 September. The (national) entrance tests will be in attendance and respecting all safety standards, while “the novelty – explained Manfredi – is that the Medicine tests can be taken in the province of residence”. The Miur decree explains in particular that, in consideration of the coronavirus emergency, “universities must ensure, both in accessing the premises used for the tests and in the subsequent stages, physical and social distancing between the candidates themselves and the adoption, by the candidates and all the other subjects present, of adequate personal and environmental hygiene measures ».
