Covid cases will decrease in Quintana Roo in 2024

Cancun, Q. Roo.- Covid cases in the state have decreased considerably this year compared to previous years, according to statistics from the Federal Ministry of Health. The latest epidemiological report indicates that there are 94 cases in Quintana Roo until July 2024.

The pandemic began in 2020, a year in which practically all activities stopped. During that period, Quintana Roo registered more than 15,600 cases, according to the National Center for Epidemiological Surveillance (Cenave).

In 2021, cases increased significantly, surpassing 60,000. During that time, hospitals were full of patients with symptoms and complications from the virus. In 2022, cases in the state surpassed 50,000. By 2023, Covid infections decreased markedly, recording more than 4,600 cases throughout the year, according to Cenave.

In 2024, 94 cases have been reported, 38 in men and 56 in women. Last year, during the same epidemiological week, there were 104 cases.

Quintana Roo is among the states with the lowest number of coronavirus cases, along with states such as Baja California, Chiapas, Chihuahua, Durango and Tamaulipas. On the other hand, the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) approved this month the sanitary registration of Paxlovid, the first drug to prevent hospitalizations and reduce mortality from Covid-19.

Paxlovid (nirmatrelvir/ritonavir), developed by Pfizer, is indicated for the treatment of adults with Covid-19 who do not require supplemental oxygen and who are at higher risk of progression, Cofepris reported.

In a statement, Cofepris announced that the Committee for New Molecules (CMN) and the technical analysis carried out by its specialized team determined that the drug meets the standards of quality, safety and efficacy. The regulatory authority stressed that the use of this drug requires a medical prescription and that it does not replace the authorized vaccines against Covid-19.

The federal agency also urged the population to file health complaints if they detect the drug being sold freely to the public.
