The Canary Islands register 5,000 more positives in a week. The number of admissions both to the ward and to the ICU has also increased in recent days
In recent days there has been a significant increase in Covid cases among people over 60 years of age, the group on which Health follow up. have been notified almost 2,500 new positives. There are 5,000 more cases in just one week and an increase in admissions, both on the ward and in the ICU.
Faced with this situation, Public Health insists that in the face of the weekend’s festive events, outdoor places are frequented, safety distances are maintained, the use of the mask and hand hygiene are intensified.
New Covid plant
The University Hospital of the Canary Islands (TO THIS) has had to open a new Covid plant due to the 10% increase in patients in the last two weeks. The profile is: advanced age, with chronic diseases and several at the same time. In fact, 40% of them are being treated for these ailments, because they are generally asymptomatic.
According to José García, responsible for Covid of the HUC, patients usually suffer from “arterial hypertension, diabetes, chronic respiratory or nephrological diseases”. There are also “cancer patients.”
The health workers work in pairs, with individual protection equipment and try to make an effort to deal with patients who are isolated, being “empathetic” and “having conversations with them”. Ruth Gandia, a HUC nurse explains that “the workload remains the same. It is difficult to work with personal protective equipment, especially when there are heat waves, for example.
Although in total more than a dozen Covid plants have been enabled, there are two patients who are in the ICU.
