The distress of hospitals during the pandemic emergency has made it tangible the need to invest more in local medicine, providing it with the necessary resources to systematize its preventive action, diagnostic investigations on patients, assistance in chronic conditions and support for non self-sufficiency.
It is necessary for the general practitioner to have access to the tools relating to first level diagnostics (general ultrasound, holter, electrocardiogram, spirometry).
The latest budget law allocated 235 million euros for the purchase of instruments for use in general medicine.
These are funds distributed but not yet fully used by many regions (Liguria is one of them).
Also from this it is clear that the awareness of the real potential to be attributed to territorial and proximity medicine is still latent today.
The general practitioner can also play a central role in the management of the current health emergency; from the analysis of symptoms to support the diagnosis and start the patient on the correct process, up to the constant support of Covid 19 patients, with remote monitoring and home visits.
By setting the appropriate therapy, reassuring patients and giving clear indications on quarantine, hospitalizations of less critical cases could be limited.
The current emergency situation calls for the extension of home care, the relaunch of local social and health services and greater management effectiveness of the integration processes between hospital and territorial medicine.
However, an investment plan is necessary that knows how to allocate resources with a clear strategic vision: that of intercepting health needs and integrating them with others of a social welfare nature.
