Carlos Cuzco has been patient since 5 am in his old red Toyota, a stone’s throw from the huge Giants Stadium at the gates of New York. On his windshield, a volunteer from the YMCA of East Rutherford, wrote a number 2 in felt-tip pen to indicate the number of boxes of food that the septuagenarian will be entitled to on Christmas Eve. In normal times, the YMCA is a popular sports club. Since the start of the pandemic in March, the indoor basketball court has been converted into a test center for the Covid-19 and a warehouse for the hundreds of cartons of food that are distributed every Tuesday to pandemic victims like Carlos.
