Covid-19: with cases and deaths on the rise in the region of Campinas, infectologist warns that reduction in hospitalizations is ‘temporary’ | Campinas and Region

The drop in hospitalizations for Covid-19 in the state of São Paulo, which is also registered in the cities that make up the Regional Health Department 7 (DRS-7), headquartered in Campinas (SP), is classified as “temporary” by the infectologist Raque Stucchi, from Unicamp. This is because other indicators, such as positive cases and deaths from the disease, continue to rise in the region.

The numbers of Fundação Seade updated this Wednesday (23) show that the weekly variation in the Campinas region was 3.2% in the number of positive cases and 14.8 in deaths, while the admissions for Covid-19 showed a drop of 3.2% compared to the previous week.

  • Confirmed cases: 394.521
  • Deaths: 11.399

The reduction in hospitalizations was highlighted by the state secretary of Health, Jean Gorinchteyn, during a press conference in which the government of São Paulo announced the extension of the transition phase of the SP Plan until July 15, which defines the operating rules of economic activities. He highlighted that in the state the reduction was 11.5%.

“This slight reduction in hospitalizations is probably temporary. Unfortunately, this is our expectation. When there is an increase in the number of cases, it follows, a two weeks later, with an increase in hospitalizations”, says Raquel.

A member of the Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases, the doctor believes that this increase in cases and deaths is a concern and that the actions that have been taken to contain the advance are timid, probably waiting for positive results from vaccination.

“The impression I have is that managers are expecting some impact from vaccination to reduce cases, hospitalizations and deaths. But what we know is that only the first dose should not cause this impact. We should only achieve when we have a large percentage of the population already vaccinated with two doses”, he ponders.

The state government has been maintaining the current phase since the end of May and suggesting that restrictive actions be taken by city halls. Campinas (SP) extended the curfew to the period between 7 pm and 5 am and closed the fight against agglomerations.

If the rules of the São Paulo Plan in force in January of this year were still followed, all cities with more than 80% occupancy of beds should be in the red phase of the plan, in which non-essential restaurants and businesses cannot function.

In the Campinas region (DRS-7), even with the 3.2% drop in the weekly variation, the Covid ICU bed occupancy rate is 80.7%. Seade Foundation figures show 259 new admissions for the disease within 24 hours.

Transition Phase Rules

  • Commercial activities: face-to-face service between 6 am and 9 pm
  • Religious Activities: individual and collective face-to-face activities
  • General Services (restaurants, culture, beauty salons, gyms): Face-to-face service between 6 am and 9 pm
  • Until 40% of the occupancy capacity of the establishments
  • curfew of 9pm to 5am

Transition phase evolution

The transition phase of the São Paulo Plan was implemented in the state on April 18th. Since then, was made more flexible at various times.

The state government’s goal was to expand, on the first day of June, the face-to-face service for 6 am and 10 pm, up to 60% of the occupation capacity in stores and curfew from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am – which did not occur.

However, on May 26 the governor backed down and decided to keep the entire state in the transition phase until Sunday (13). On the date, Doria stated that the suspension of flexibility was due to the numbers of the pandemic, which were already growing.

“The indicators of the pandemic recommend caution at this time, and it is the caution that we are adopting,” he said during a press conference.

Then, a further postponement of evolution was announced on June 9th. On the day, the state government established that the transition phase would continue until June 30 and defined a recommendation to cities with more than 90% occupancy to adopt stricter rules.

The recommendation was followed by municipalities such as Campinas, which extended the curfew, and by the four cities of the Mogi Guaçu region, whose rules were adopted together.

Even before this recommendation, Protection, Socorro e Black Sierra they had already restricted activities.

The extension of the curfew began to take effect on Monday (21). As a result, services, businesses and economic activities must close in-person operations at 7:00 pm and may resume after 5:00 am.

This Wednesday (23), the municipal administration informed that it will reassess the situation of the pandemic in the city until June 30 to define whether it keeps the curfew extended or resumes all the rules of the transition phase.

Sectors without face-to-face operation between 7:00 pm and 5:00 am:

  • Restaurants (bars remain prohibited);
