COVID-19: Windsor hospital to stop elective surgeries | Coronavirus: Ontario

In a statement, the hospital said the decision difficult but necessary comes as its facilities face a potentially critical shortage of intensive care beds.

As of Monday, 60 patients with COVID-19 were being treated at the facility.

The current COVID-19 situation in our hospital and in our community creates significant implications for our hospital and intensive care bed occupancy, as well as human resource limitations.Dr Wassim Saad, chief of staff at the hospital, said in a statement.

Earlier this month, the hospital already canceled elective surgeries requiring a hospital stay, such as hip and knee replacements.

The new cancellations apply to all non-urgent pre-programmed procedures.

Urgent interventions will continue to be provided

The layout will halve the current number of operations performed, according to the hospital.

Urgent interventions will always be provided and cancer patients will continue to be a priority, the establishment said.

The facility is also facing pressure on its staff resources due to the operation of a COVID-19 vaccination center as well as two testing centers on its premises.

The hospital also plans to increase the opening hours of the Met Campus screening center in the near future.
