Covid-19: what awaits us in the fall

Infection with the disease caused by the new coronavirus Covid-19 has not ended in the world or in Latvia, therefore the previously determined preventive measures must be continued. The beginning of the flu season should also be taken into account in the autumn, Ilze Arāja, a representative of the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (SPKC), emphasized to the portal “Delfi”.

She emphasized the importance of influenza vaccination, especially for people at risk: pregnant women, young children, patients with chronic diseases, and people over the age of 65. “It could also be useful to talk to a family doctor about some preventive issues that best know your patient’s health,” Arāja said, adding that this is especially important for people with some chronic conditions.

“Influenza vaccination is more likely to rule out the disease if it has been vaccinated. Infectious diseases cannot be predicted,” Araja said, adding that flu and Covid-19 have similar symptoms.

Analyzing the statistics of Covid-19 cases in Latvia, it was increased by group cases, which have been found in several places, including social care institutions.

“We are seeing what is happening in the world, in Europe and at our closest neighbors, Lithuania and Estonia, and Latvia is currently at the bottom of the list in terms of morbidity. Predictions cannot be made,” Arāja said.

Previously, Jurijs Perevoščikovs, Director of the Infectious Diseases Risk Analysis and Prevention Department of the SPKC, pointed out that Latvia currently has the lowest incidence of Covid-19 among European Union countries, a figure that Latvia maintains for almost two weeks. “Currently, there are 4.2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in Latvia in two weeks,” Perevoshchikov emphasized.

In the European Union (EU) as a whole, the incidence has tripled in two months – from two months ago, the incidence of Covid-19 in Europe averaged 16 cases per 100,000 population, but has now risen to 46 cases. “Our figure of 4.2 is actually ten times lower than the EU average,” Perevoshchikov said.

The main source of cases in Latvia is travel. Their overall proportion of all detected Covid-19 cases is 33%, according to the epidemiologist. The most common cases of these infections are related to travel from Great Britain, Ukraine, Russia, Estonia and France, according to the information gathered by the SPKC.

Ministry of Health (VM) chief infectologist Uga Dumpis previously expressed concern that the biggest risk in the autumn could be the activities of universities and students outside school hours.

“Social student life has proven to be a major cause of viral transmission in many countries,” the infectologist said.

Dumpis expressed hope that universities will continue distance learning as much as possible.

The portal “Delfi” offers graphs to see the indicators of Covid-19 disease in Latvia from the first case until the beginning of September.
