The mortality rate in the United States increased by 15.9% in 2020 compared to 2019, rising from 715.2 to 828.7 deaths per 100,000 people, the report said.

Preliminary data suggest that the top 10 causes of death in the U.S. in 2020 were:

1. Heart disease
2. Cancer
3. Covid-19
4. Unintentional injuries
5. Insults
6. Chronic lower respiratory diseases
7. Alzheimer’s disease
8. Diabetes
9. Influenza and pneumonia
10. Kidney diseases

Researchers at the National Center for Health Statistics have analyzed death certificate data, looking closely at deaths among the U.S. population between January and December 2020.

With the inclusion of Covid-19 in the list of the most common causes of death, suicide, which ranked 10th a year earlier, was excluded.

Researchers report that about 3.36 million deaths were recorded in the United States last year. Covid-19 is the leading cause or contributor to death in almost 378,000 or approximately 11.3% of these deaths. Heart disease has caused 690,882 deaths and cancer 598,932 deaths.

The report also says that life expectancy in the United States has fallen to 77.8 years. The last time it was so low was in 2006.

These data are preliminary, so figures and mortality rates are subject to change as additional information becomes available. Due to the length of time required to investigate the causes of death, final data for a given year are usually published approximately 11 months after the end of the calendar year.
