Covid-19 victims in Latvia: both with and without comorbidities – Health

In recent weeks, the number of Covid-19 victims in Latvia has been growing rapidly. An average of 4-6 people die from coronavirus per day. Doctors who are fighting for their lives explain that many have a side effect – diabetes, heart or lung disease. However, there are those who have had no disease other than Covid-19. According to the current data, the mortality is 2% to 4%, reports LTV “Panorama”.

The statistical curve for deaths in the spring was flat. In March – no one, in April – a day one, then several days – without the dead, then again – one or two. There were no significant changes in the statistics of deaths in May and in all summer months. On October 24, suddenly four, after a day – four again. November 6 – seven dead, November 13 – nine. There is no longer a day when no news of new victims arrives, reports “Panorama”.

“Most patients with chronic co-morbidities end up in our hospital, so it is difficult to answer why the condition is getting worse and it ends in death,” admitted Monta Madelāne, the head of the Department of Dangerous Infections at Riga East Clinical Hospital. “In some cases, this is due to the addition of a Covid-19 infection; in some cases, Covid-19 itself cannot be blamed, but there is decompensation of the whole organism, leading to a fatal outcome.”

In Latvia, the two youngest deaths are in the age group of 30 to 35 years. One person had no other illnesses, the other who died this week had a severe, chronic illness. Most – 70 out of 141 dead – are over 80 years old. Doctors explain this by the fact that people in old age have various other diseases.

“The most common we see are diabetes, cardiovascular pathologies, more often overweight, several have lung pathologies,” Madelāne said. Most inpatients arrive on time, but there are parts that arrive late. Most treatment at home has taken place for at least a week.

“What we observe in the hospital is that these patients sometimes do not feel worse. The lack of oxygen in the lungs and throughout the body is not felt, at least in the initial stages, and it is more difficult to monitor at home, ”said the hospital representative.

The doctor reminded that if a coronavirus patient has difficulty breathing and the temperature rises, they should call their family doctor or emergency department.
