Although the health emergency due to covid-19 was lifted in April 2022, the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) continues to monitor the behavior of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes the disease.
In a statement issued this Wednesday and titled “New variants of covid-19”, the MSP points out that the majority of the SARS-CoV-2 viruses circulating worldwide are sublineages of the Ómicron variant and that, for the moment, none It is a variant of concern.
In 51 countries, and specifically in the region, the EG.5 (Eris) variant is present, which according to evaluations by the World Health Organization (WHO) is not a high risk for public health.
This EG.5 (Eris) variant, classified as of interest due to having genetic changes that may affect its transmissibility and/or virulence, “was also detected in Uruguay along with BA.2.86, classified as a variant under monitoring,” the letter details. .
The symptoms produced by the aforementioned variants are those already known, those produced by Ómicron, and which can occur all together or just some: intense headache, tiredness, body pain, throat pain, fatigue, dry cough, fever. “If any of these symptoms appear, consult your health provider,” urges the MSP.
Likewise, the shipment reminds that the appearance of mutations “constitutes a natural and expected event within the evolutionary process of viruses, and monitoring is permanent, both in our country and at the regional level.”
Furthermore, he emphasizes that “thanks to natural immunity as well as that acquired by vaccination, the impact of these new variants does not generate a high risk for people’s health.”
New vaccination
The last anti-Covid vaccine booster was administered to the population in December. For this reason, the MSP plans a new dose before the end of the year.
“The National Vaccine Advisory Commission has already ordered a new anticovid vaccination for the at-risk population. “We are in the waiting period until the end of the year, because we gave the last reinforcement in December 2022. Closer to December we will probably begin with the new vaccination of the at-risk population, we will announce that in time,” he said at a conference. press release by the Undersecretary of Public Health, José Luis Satdjian.
“The vaccines that are being supplied have demonstrated effectiveness in terms of serious risks and death in the case of Ómicron and the other variants in circulation. Therefore, in a few weeks we will begin again with vaccination in the at-risk population,” said the official.
